CHIMAX is a strategy card game you can teach in about sixty seconds and lose to your ten-year-old in about six minutes. Everyone plays a card face down. Highest card takes the Book. That is the entire rule — and it is nowhere near as simple as it sounds.
Ebony is where CHIMAX started: a deep black mosaic shot through with gold, so the numbers seem to surface out of the card rather than sit on it. The one that looks like it belongs on a table where people take the game seriously.
Why one round turns into five
- A hierarchy you feel before you memorize it. Infinity beats everything. Zero beats every number but falls to Infinity. One-Half sits at the bottom and loses to almost anything — which is exactly why holding it hurts.
- The Question Mark makes it a bluffing game. Play it and you must declare it as 15, 25, 50 or 100. Claim big and you take the round — unless someone is holding the real card, and then you lose it entirely. Each value can only be claimed once per round, so the good lies run out.
- No peeking. That's the point. Cards stay face down. What you remember about what has already been played is the whole edge.
- Ten minutes or two hours. Pick a target score and the length of the night is yours. Two players go to 75 or 100. A table of five races to 20.
- Two players or the whole table. It works as a head-to-head duel and it works with everyone crowded around.
Where it actually gets used
Kitchen tables, classroom free periods, airport gates, waiting rooms, dorm floors, road trips. Thirteen cards fit in a jacket pocket, so it goes everywhere a board game cannot.
